Take the Nickey Line to Harpenden, then join the Upper Lea Valley Way to Luton. Ride the busway through Luton to Dunstable, then climb up to the top of the Downs. Coffee at National Trust visitors centre. Back via Studham and Gaddesden Row

Ride south then east along the Grand Union Canal towpath, turn north east along the Paddington Arm to the Yummy PL (Polish Cafe) for lunch. Then roads – some quite busy, others residential – to a circuit around Wembley Stadium, and quiet roads back to Rickmansworth. Pace will be slow – perhaps 9 or 10 mph, because the towpath can be gravely, low hanging branches, pedestrians, dog walkers and narrow sections. Now avoids Sudbury Hill and the hill to Mount Vernon. 

Any bike, though skinny tyres might struggle

Routes for All no 46. Out via Bedmond, Potters Crouch, skirt the edge of St Albans via Gorhambury and Childwickbury Eastates to Redbournbury Mill for coffee and option to buy freshly baked bread and pastries. Back skirting the edge of Hemel
